Flax fibre cloth is an engineered reinforcement fabric made from the bast of the flaxseed plant.  While flax fibre is one of the oldest cultivated fibres for textiles, it is only recently that its use as a fibreglass substitute has been achieved.  Incorporating flax fibre cloth in the lamination reduces the use of regular glass by 1/3rd and adds a great earthy look and more importantly helps lower our carbon footprint

Flax provides high levels of performance, coupled with the ease of processing normally associated with glass-reinforced materials. The materials use low-twist technology to provide a combination of sustainability, performance and process-ability not previously seen in composites. Compared to glass fibre composites, Our Flax Cloth offers reduced weight, improved environmental impact, vibration damping, similar specific stiffness and safer handling.

Typical processes for Flax Cloth include Hand lamination, vacuum infusion or resin transfer molding using either standard resins or bio-based resins. The fabrics can also be pre-pregged, and processing is carried out in the same way as Fibreglass cloth.

Flax fibre can be processed in a similar way to glass or carbon fibre reinforcement and is suitable for use with a wide variety of resins such as epoxy, vinyl-ester and polyester resin, including more sustainable or environmentally friendly synthetic and bio-based systems.

Flax fibre reinforcement is ideally suited to laminating by vacuum resin infusion where the vacuum consolation results in a high fibre to resin ratio and the resin infusion process produces void free laminates with an excellent visual appearance. Flax can also be laminated using a range of other processes including wet lay-up, resin transfer molding (RTM), press molding (matched tool), and prepregging.
